What is contemporary dance?
Contemporary dance is a dynamic and evolving art form that invites dancers to explore and interpret a wide range of movements and expressions.
Emerging in the mid-20th century, contemporary dance has become a dominant style for trained dancers worldwide, embracing influences from ballet, jazz, lyrical and street dance forms.

Where do we see it?
Contemporary dance is at the heart of professional dance today and is ubiquitous in popular culture, from theatre stages to our TV screens.
It features in reimagined ballets by Matthew Bourne, West End shows like Hamilton, Cirque du Soleil performances, TV competitions like So You Think You Can Dance, and music videos by our favourite artists, from Taylor Swift to Sia.

Rambert Creative Movers (rising 3) & 4 yrs
Celebrating movement at the earliest stage, our Creative Movers & Contemporary Dance classes take children on a joyful and imaginative journey.
We begin each class with an energetic warm-up, followed by physical and spatial skill development, with a deep dive into their imaginations to finish. Children
are supported to develop physical skills, improve communication, harness musicality, foster creativity and grow in confidence

What a Pre-Primary Contemporary Dance
Dancers start by warming up and stretching; with gentle exercises to prepare their bodies for class, improving flexibility and preventing injury.
Children will learn a fusion of basic steps from Ballet, Contemporary Dance, and simple acrobatic influenced movements; such as simple leaps, turns, and graceful arm movements (port de bras). The focus is on developing coordination, balance, and body awareness.
Creative Movement & Improvisation is a key part of Contemporary dance for this age group. Children are encouraged to express their own feelings and ideas through free movement. Children will also be introduced to the early choreographic process and developing their own movement sequences.
Pupils learn short, simple dance routines that tell a story or express an emotion related to the theme. This helps them understand how movement can convey meaning.
Children finish their class with a Cool-Down: A final stretch and relaxation period to end the class.
